  1st Stripers
 

Atherton, Benson T. Recruit of Company G, 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment, a resident of Fairfield, IL, and publisher of the Prarie Pioneer, discharged from service on November 1, 1862 due to wounds.

Edwards, Charles M. Private of Company B., 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment, a resident of Shawneetown, IL, a newsman before and after the war, rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Rhue, Walter A. Recruit of Company G, 18th Illinois Regiment, a resident of Carmi, IL, later transferred to the Regimental Band, had been a publisher before the war.

Stewart, R. F. First Sergeant of Company B, 29th Illinois Regiment, a resident of Carmi, IL, had been an editor of the White County Advocate prior to the war.

Barton, John H. First Lieutenant, Company I, 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment, a resident of Carmi, IL an owner, publisher, and editor during his newspaper career.
 

Boseman, James T. Recruit, Company G, 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment, a resident of Carmi, IL he later transferred to the Regimental Band.

Edmonson, Theodore. Corporal, Company G, 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment, a resident of Fairfield, IL, publisher of the Illinois Patriot.  The 1860 census shows him as a 17 year old printer, born in Illinois, with assets of $1900.

Martin, Otis P. Sergeant Major, 8th Infantry Regiment, a resident of Peoria, IL.

Schell, John W. Corporal, promoted to Sergeant Company D. 8th Illinois, a resident of Fairfield, IL.  The 1860 census shows him as a 22 year old printer, born in Pennsylvania, with assets of $150.

Walsh, Thomas. Private, Company E, 8th Illinois, resident of Peoria, IL

Recruit Ahterton and Private Edwards were the publishers and Recruit Rhue and first Sergeant Stewart were editors of this first Stars and Stripes.
